To prevent unwanted popups or popdowns from showing up on your browser, use Mozilla browser.
Frankly I was an early Netscape user, got disappointed in the middle due to bad performance and high number of critical defects. Moved to IE in the middle.
I have however switched to mozilla now as it really cool in every way. You get all you need from a browser, beats IE in every department.

Here's the tip. Go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Scripts & Plugins and set what windows you want or don't want to your heart content.
Yes Mozilla can also prevent cookies being send to non-originating sites. Some reviewer mentioned only IE could do that!!
